captainlordauditor: (batman)
Brushing this place off since I haven't been using it. I just finished reading Batman: War Games, aka the infamous storyline where Spoiler dies.

-First off, this arc definitely majorly interrupts the pacing in Nightwing. I really wish I could read what Nightwing would have looked like with those 4 (or 10, counting Nightwing Year One) extra issues that got shoved into a major event.

-Second - why did nobody tell me Black Mask did blackface? No, seriously, I got all kinds of warnings about Stephanie’s death, to the point where I was expecting it to be much much more graphic and sexualized than it was, but absolutely nobody thought to mention the part where rich white boy Roman Sionis does blackface.

On top of being racist, this is where War Games really starts to fall apart because it’s the first of many plotpoints that just don’t make any damn sense. For the first half or so, War Games is an arc that leans hard into the gritty, noir realism tone of 2000s Batman, which I usually like. But Black Mask, a wealthy white man, can flawlessly imitate a Black gang leader’s voice after ten minutes practice? I don’t think so. This plotpoint veers left into comic booky nonsense in a way that sharply breaks my disbelief. Black Mask has to imitate Orpheus voice, speech patterns, and accent, and not one person notices.

(Did I mention that Orpheus, Onyx, and Commissioner Akins are the only Black characters in this? Yeah, because that’s a thing. So of the 3 Black characters, one’s an antagonist at best and one gets murdered and impersonated by a white man halfway through.)

Honestly, after this, I had a hard time caring about how badly done Stephanie's torture scenes were. Not because I didn't care, but because it was pretty much standard sexualization of women in defeat that I've seen in other comics, and I felt like it was overshadowed by the literal fucking blackface in 2000-fucking-5.

3 - Related to this, the endgame of Black Mask ending up on top as chief gang leader of all of Gotham also makes no damn sense. Black Mask gets people’s trust by impersonating someone else, somehow convinces them to follow him when he reveals himself, then deliberately sends dozens of his own people to die in the Clocktower. When the Clocktower explodes he doesn’t obviously publicly survive, which to me should lead to people assuming he’s dead - again. Hardly a resume that fosters a large army of underlings.

Honestly, if I were Red Hood, I’d just shoot Black Mask and tell people I was lowering the cut taken and wouldn’t knowingly send anyone to die. That alone should give me enough clout to gain the loyalty of most of the mobs, making my rules seem pretty reasonable, no duffelbag of heads needed.

4, and I know I'm the only one who cares about this - Where the hell did the Aranas, Tarantula's gang, go? Tarantula has them in Batman #634, but then in Nightwing #99 she’s still in Gotham, working alone, with no explanation as to why. They just vanished into the ether. This really bugs me, especially since Tarantula often suffers from doing whatever the writers need her to do regardless of whether or not it makes sense (see also her appearances in Secret Six, which is incongruent with every single one of her appearances elsewhere). When we need her for War Games, she has a gang. When we need her for to call Bruce out and potentially draw parallels with Jason and Stephanie, poof, they're gone. We don't see them with her, or swearing allegiance to Black Mask - they just vanish.

5 - Almost the entirety of the epilogue, War Crimes, was unnecessary, and actively made it worse. The only things we needed to know from that was that 1. Arthur exposed Stephanie as Spoiler and Robin, 2. Arturo Rodriguez was working with Black Mask (arguably also unnecessary) 3. Leslie left Gotham and 4. Commissioner Akins was keeping his job. All of this could’ve been done in one issue, without several twists that ended in assassinating Leslie’s character for Bruce’s man pain.

the Black Mask/Joker plotline was especially dumb. It ended with both of them in the exact same places they’d been at the start of the epilogue (Joker in prison, Mask as top dog). There’s also absolutely no reason it had to have been Black Mask impersonating Bruce - this is what underlings are for, guys! What’s the point in making him head mob boss if he’s not using his underlings?

Conclusion - I actually really liked the first half, but as soon as Orpheus died it started unravelling.

Fortunately, despite the mess, I was able to get to the comic book store and get my copy yesterday. I read it yesterday and have been sitting on the stories in it for a day, so I'm ready to talk about it.
-”A little nudge” was an absolutely garbage characterization of Bruce. The idea that Bruce Wayne would ever value obedience and trust in authority so much makes no goddamn sense. If that were the case, he would never have become Batman. Not a fan of Dick not calling him out on this, because this has to be a “do as I say not as I do” case for this set up to work, and there’s no reason Dick wouldn’t yell at him about it since he’s about to leave anyway. Also we’ve. Seen this story before. I don’t think we needed another iteration of Dick losing Robin.
”Aftershocks” and “Team Building” were cute! But I was really hoping this anthology would be entirely stories from these characters as Robin, and the fact that we basically got NO content with Dick as Robin since we started with him leaving it behind annoys me. I’m also 90% sure that I’m not gonna remember these stories in 6 months. Loved Dick correcting the villain’s grammar.
-”Lesson Plan” was.....fine? It was a nice idea but the execution fell a bit flat for me. I think it could’ve benefited from some full flashbacks rather than the ghosty background Bruces it had.
-”More Time” is easily the best one. Solid characterization, a great use of comics as medium and using the attributes to the story’s benefit. I really don’t think this story would have the same impact in any other medium. I wasn’t a huge fan of the art style - it was a bit too animesque for my taste - but I really loved it anyway. Worth my money.
-”Extra Credit” - also fine? Not really my thing, but it was good, and it made a decent use of the medium. I do have a bone to pick with it though, which is that this story contains the only time any of the boys besides Damian is referred to as Bruce’s family, and Tim immediately corrects it to “Role model”. And like....this would be fine, it makes sense for Tim to see Bruce as not his dad, but this is the only time in the entire issue where it’s even suggested that Bruce is family to them, and it gets shot down.
-”Boy Wonders” - This was good! I liked seeing the boys having brotherly bonding time, and I liked their different perspectives.
- “Fitting in” was........bad. Everyone else got stories that had something meaningful to say about their relationships with either a)being Robin or b)Bruce. Steph got.......this. I guess it made a couple moves towards her being seen as a replacement for Tim? Kinda? Not really? Didn’t like it.
-”My Best Friend” is another one to which I give a shrug. It was cute, but I don’t think it really belonged in this anthology, and again, don’t think I’ll remember it in 6 months.
-”Bat and Mouse” has a good title and the rest of it is....there. This is where the bulk of my complaint with the treatment of the family comes from: Damian is constantly reiterated as being Bruce’s Son And Family in this story, to the point where the table of contents lists him not as Robin but as “Son of Batman”. This is a thing that DC does a lot with Damian, and I hate it. It felt especially obvious here. This was also a story which, unlike the others, was definitively non-stand alone, and I wasn’t a huge fan of that. I also feel like, while the other stories, even all treated their Robins as flawed but generally good people (including Jason!), this one leaned more towards villain protagonist, which. Well. I’m not gonna say it, but. Yeah.
One last thing: On top of being disappointed that this included stories about Nightwing and Red Robin rather than just Robin, I was also majorly disappointed that after the multiple covers that featured her and being namedropped in the description of the book, Carrie Kelley was never even mentioned, let alone given her own story. Like, why give her her own cover variant if you’re never going to mention her? It’s not like there was a dearth of Robins to give covers to, Jason didn’t get one. So that was, uh, a weird and irritating choice.
Overall - eh. More Time stood out the most, and Boy Wonders was good. I got a nice cover out of it to frame and put on my wall, so for 10$ I’m happy. But I don’t know if I’ll be ordering Catwoman 80th.

One week until Purim means it's 4 weeks until spring break, which unfortunately falls just before Pesach this year, but good G@d am I exhausted already.

How have I survived six weeks? Can I get some sleep please? And possibly some intelligent conversation?

I'm aware that I'm not the most coherent right now but....oy.

Timing means I won't get a proper spring break with a good amount of rest, but please. I'd settle for the ability to hold a conversation about a written work that goes deeper than a summary.

It's just under 3 weeks until Purim, which means it's time to start baking and getting serious about finding nice jams and butters. I already have prune and apricot in my fridge, but I'd really like raspberry and possibly something else, as well. Hopefully I'll get to the store Monday and can see what they have in the way of weird ones I haven't tried before.

More importantly, what I'm really excited about: Research updates! Our kickstarter to get funds for digitizing documents is $20 over our goal and still has 11 days to go, which is way better than we were hoping for.

We also may have found Simons! My hunch was right, and he was lying about his name; he was really Simonson. Unfortunately there were two David Simonsons living in Manhattan in 1900, with their parents' names the same (yes, really), but even accounting for moving between the dates of the two records and someone deciding to troll the census taker, they're definitely not the same person; one lived with his parents and was unmarried, the other was married and had children. Unfortunately the one we're pretty sure is right vanishes after that, but we have ideas on where to keep looking for him, so we're optimistic.

I last posted 3 weeks ago and my life has gotten better, but more exhausting since the semester started. My sister got out of the hospital after a week, which was a huge relief - I was afraid she'd have to stay in there longer. I haven't found a translator yet, but I have found at least one Yiddish newspaper from the right period of time and area that's been digitized. No clue if it has anything worth translating yet, though.

Bad news: My sister's in the hospital. I won't get into details now, but needless to say I am stressed.

Good news: Because I needed a distraction, I called my sister in DC and asked her to distract me. While I was talking to her I realised that while we've gone through as much information as we can from the larger English on the strike, nobody on my team even mentioned the possibility of local papers in other languages reporting on it. This despite the fact that Simmons claimed 40% of the strikers were Jewish and the face of the strike was Italian!

So now I'm off to figure out if we can find any papers in other languages that have been saved and, ideally, digitized, and if so, figure out translators for Yiddish, Italian, and possibly some form of Chinese.

It's 3am, and I'm thinking about halacha and minhag governing pokemon.

If a tropius or bulbasaur or other plant pokemon grows fruit can you eat it or would that be breaking the prohibition on eating meat from living animals? Is the fruit kosher if the pokemon that grew it isn't? Are plant pokemon plants or animals? If they're plants does that mean you can eat any part of the pokemon or just the fruit?

I have so many questions. I don't even play pokemon!

if I’m getting married*, how is “relative” defined for the purposes of finding witnesses? I know blood relatives and their spouses don’t count, but what about the sister of my brother-in-law**? What about her husband?

*I’m not

**as in, my sister’s husband’s sister. English needs better words for this

Over the summer, I was invited to help moderate a Discord server, and commented that I was surprised as I "didn't consider myself a dog". I then paused and explained the sheepdog theory I have, which is that there are three kinds of people: sheep, sheepdogs, and goats. None of them are inherently better than any of the others, just suited to different jobs. If you're at all familiar with herds, you can probably figure out what I mean by each of these: Sheepdogs lead and direct, sheep follow, and goats kind of do what they want until they get their heads stuck in the fences and some poor farmer has to come get them out.

This isn't the best thought out metaphor, considering that "sheeple" is such a universally acknowledged insult, at least here in the US. But it did lead to the other mods commenting that I have a knack for metaphors. Since then I've noticed it more myself, and marked out some especially great/unusual metaphors I've used in the past months. A couple weeks ago, when I posted Learning How To Ask on Ao3, one of the first comments I got on it was about the simile used in it.

The thing about metaphors and similes, is that used properly in writing they tell you just as much about the viewpoint character (or omniscient narrator, as the case may be) as they do about the situation. The viewpoint character in the above fic was raised wealthy and genteel, and is used to that world (no pun intended); a jewelry box simile works for her. For a different character I might use their paints, or carpentry tools.

So, anyway, here's a list of fun metaphors/similes I've used, both in conversation and in fic over the past few months, in no particular order. Several of these are from WiPs.

(in regards to a 2am idea about writing a book on the Newsboy Strike of 1899)"I think we should all sleep on it and decide in like 2 weeks lest this prove as ill thought out as the strike itself."

(on the phenomenon of entire friend groups ending up being gay) "birds of a feather flock together even when they all think they're drab sparrows instead of clever magpies."

"So Yoni took Mikhail and climbed out onto the fire escape, or up onto the roof, and looked for stars they couldn’t see, thinking of the town in the desert that Tateh wanted, where the stars looked like flour sprinkled across the table for kneading challah."

"He eyed Dina carefully, like she was an etrog he was thinking of buying. He looked at Cowboy for a moment and smiled. Dina’s heart didn’t slow down when he did that.
“What’s your name, boy?”
“Ed.” She was glad her voice didn’t squeak.
Kloppman eyed her again down his nose, like an important piece of Talmud he was trying to make sense of."

"Dawn broke, like an egg, like an earthen pitcher knocked onto the floor by the family mouser(a term which has fallen out of use in the intervening century, as cats have taken the roles of beloved pets and internet memes, rather than working animals, and mice are taken care of by means of traps), and sunlight oozed through the open window into the tiny room."

"[...]many words have dripped into the abominable English tongue in our day, filling the cracks like tar filling the cracks in a badly maintained asphalt road, serving as terms for words Americans believe are needed yet lacked before."

Do you guys have any favorite metaphors/similes? Ones you created or ones you just like to use, either in writing or in speaking?

  •  the tie pull
    • “you kids can have anything you want” “forget junk food I want Dave”
    • Medda says Jack can have anything he wants, Jack pulls Dave off screen by his tie. A song about getting laid plays and then we cut to two hours later.
  • Jack climbing out the fire escape instead of using the front door like a normal person so they can have a Moment™ that looks like they’re Romeo and Juliet on the balcony
    • “see you tomorrow, carrying the banner”
    • Jack, who knows that that means “sleeping on the street”: haha yeah sure
  • Calling each other their partners after knowing each other for about 12 hours
  • Davey slowly losing his clothes throughout the film
    • he starts out with tie, vest, suspenders and hat, in carrying the banner
    • in world will know he’s loosened his tie
    • in seize the day he’s lost both the tie and the vest
    • in king of new york he doesn’t have suspenders
    • idk how his pants stay up there
    • at the end he doesn’t even have a shirt
  • The fact that Jack’s FIRST instinct when he needs a spot to lay low for a bit is to go to Davey’s even though they’ve known each other less than a week and he doesn’t even ask to come in he just HANGS OUT ON THE FIRE ESCAPE, LIKE A GAY MESS
    • “there’s nothing to stay for is there” Sarah, a knowing lesbian: sure, Jack
  • the one spot during the rally where Jack sits on the swing and Davey pushes him so he can kick the cops
  • Davey’s nat20 on stealth
    • “jack. jack come on. run.”
    • Jack planning on going with Pulitzer’s people anyway but imMEDIATELY RUNNING JUST BECAUSE DAVEY TOLD HIM TO
  • The entirety of the alleyway scene
    • “they could put you in jail” “i don’t care”  YOU HAVE KNOWN EACH OTHER FOR A WEEK AND A HALF
  • Santa Fe reprise is so obviously about Davey I’m putting it on here
  • the fact that it was Davey the Delanceys threatened first in an attempt to rile up Jack
    • “guess I couldn’t be something I ain’t” “what, a scab” “straight smart”
  • “I got family here” [cut to Davey seeing him and smiling, without a full shirt on]
  • they have known each other for TWO FUCKING WEEKS
  • I think I got most of them but feel free to add more
Some more points from the novelization that have come to my attention:

  • the description of Jack when Davey first meets him and he’s described as “dashing”
  • this bit:
  • image
  • the fact that there are 5+ moments when they look like they're about to kiss
  • this bit, where they looked like they DID kiss until I watched it again:
  • image
  • DAVEY SPENDING EVERY SCENE AFTER ONCE AND FOR ALL IN HIS UNDER SHIRT
And a contribution from tumblr user sigma-receptor:
  •  the way jack touches davey’s face after saving the jacobs family from the delanceys
    •  that’s not the first time he’s tenderly lifted davey’s chin while davey was kneeling in front of him

I think we should move Channukah to the summer, and here's why:
  1. the summer is already an empty season for holidays. The only ones we have are weird valentine's day, which nobody celebrates, and Tisha B'Av, which is depressing.
  2. more importantly, it would discourage goyim from associating Hanuccah with Christmas! For example, the fact that our gift giving tradition is completely separate from the Christian one, and comes from the tradition of gambling.
  3. Get rid of the "bring the light in!!!" stuff and focus on the REAL purpose of chananunaunaka: you and your five brothers pointing at a huge army and going "yeah, I can take 'em" and then you DO
